Voters Will Decide on Proposed Amendments

Election day is moving in fast; voters, are you ready to decide some big ballot questions?

There will be plenty of them on the ballot for Nebraskans to peruse and ultimately ok or reject.

For instance, there are four proposed State Constitutional Amendments voters will see on ballots in polling places across Nebraska.

One amendment would increase pay for lawmakers.

Another would increase the number of consecutive 4 year terms lawmakers can serve from 2, which it currently is, to 3.

State Senator Tony Fulton, whose own tenure comes to an end soon because of term limits, laid out the pros and cons involving term limits.

"So those who are in favor of it would say that three terms would give senators more of an opportunity to learn the lawmaking process and therefore become more effective; whereas those who would like to limit it to two terms say, well, that's what we did. We put term limits in place. Let's leave well enough alone; and two terms is enough for any given senator."

Fulton also laid out the pros and cons regarding proposed pay raises for senators.

They currently make $12,000 dollars a year. The increase would pay senators $22,500 dollars a year starting in January 2013.

One first-time voter told us, "I just got my ballot in the mail. So I'm gonna sit down and look at that later this week."
