Weather permitting, work is anticipated to begin the week of June 23 on US-34/US-281 from Hastings to Doniphan in the southbound lanes, and on N-2 from Cairo to Grand Island, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads.
Werner Construction, Inc., of Hastings, Nebraska, has the $1.2 million contract. Work will include milling and asphalt overlay of the shoulders and adding rumble strips from Reference Post 212.95 to Reference Post 222.40, in the southbound lanes from just south of Doniphan to the city limits of Hastings. Work will then move to N-2, Reference Post 343.98 to Reference Post 355.81, from the city limits of Cairo to just west of the US-281 and N-2 Interchange at Grand Island.
Traffic on the southbound lane of US-34 will be controlled by one-lane work zones and on N-2 with a pilot car and flaggers. The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.
The Department of Roads’ manager for this project is Bob Nordhues of Grand Island.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through the construction zone, and allow extra time due to traffic delays and reduced speed zones.
