Tom Ahlshwede’s two kids played in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Lincoln Southwest on Sunday.
The tournament brought in 46 teams, a total of 190 kids, from all over the state of Nebraska.
"We wanted just one more chance for them to get a ball in their hands and play some basketball," said Ahlshwede.
With basketball season wrapping up for middle school students, Ahlshwede decided to organize the tournament as a farewell to the season.
“It’s a way to fundraise for the basketball program, but also to give back to the community,” he said.
Ahlshwede partnered with the Food Bank of Lincoln by asking each team to donate ten cans of food as an entry fee.
“Hopefully they will realize that it’s beneficial to think about the community and give back,” he said, “and be thankful for what they have, and what their parents have sacrificed for them.”
Participants donated more than $400 to the food bank, along with five barrels of canned goods.
“It's a great program that really fits the need in the community.”
