Some non-union members would have to pay union dues under a bill (LB57) discussed by the Legislature Tuesday.
The proposal from Senator Don Preister of Omaha would apply to workplaces that have collective bargaining agreements with unions. Non-union members who work under the agreements would have to pay dues but the bill would not force people to join unions.
Preister says it is unfair that non-union members who benefit from labor deals negotiated by unions don't have to pay dues. About eight percent of employers in the state would be affected by such a law.
The Legislature did not vote on the bill.
