For animal lovers, a college degree and demand for jobs
Kids skilled at attending to the family dog may be able to earn more than kudos from mom.
The growing pet-food industry has encouraged some at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln that the school needs a new academic major in food technology for pets. Food-science professor Randy Wehling said other universities offer courses in the topic, but none have a major.
The Board of Regents will consider approving the proposed new major Friday.
Spending on pet food and products has increased sharply across the country, from 21 billion dollars in 1996 to more than 38 billion dollars last year.
