Garrett Bowder just bought a new car with all the money he's earned entertaining people. He's young, he's talented and he's a Champion Whistler.
Garrett is only 14 years old, but this Pender High School freshman is already a very accomplished whistler. He has won the talent competition at the Nebraska State Fair and he's also a 3-time champion at the Iowa State Fair. He says he was only 3 and a half years old when his 5 older siblings teased him because he couldn't whistle. That motivated him to learn to whistle.
From pop, to polka, to patriotic music, Garrett is a whistling jukebox. HE started whistling a decade ago not knowing that he would one day become a champion, "I didn't even realize it that I was this good until I was this good so one day I just thought I'm doin' pretty good, I better just keep whistling."
And all of the practicing has made him a popular act in Northeast Nebraska. From rodeos to Veteran's Day ceremonies, Garrett likes to share his gift, "It makes me happy when I see people having a great time listening to me." And senior centers are one of his favorite places to perform, "It kind of makes 'em happy."
And it makes Garrett happy too. So much so that he whistles around the clock, "I have whistled in my sleep my mom's caught me whistling in my sleep." But Garrett's mom Liesa says her son does his best work when he's awake, "He's taught himself. I haven't taught him nothing. He's got an ear, he's got and ear for music."
Along with being a skilled whistler Garrett is a pretty skilled wrestler as well. He currently owns a 14 and 1 record.
Garrett enjoys performing at special events. If you would like to book him for a future engagement call (402) 385-2126.
