On most chilly winter weekends, Avoca, Nebraska is a pretty quiet little town. But all that changes on the last weekend of January where each year for the past three decades, duck racers from far and wide have gathered to test their duck luck and run for the Quack-Off championship.
Avoca Fire Chief Marty Brammier says duck racing enthusiasts are bussed in from miles around, "For a small town that starts off 250 people, we swell to about 2,400 to 2,500 within about the 4 to 5 hour period that we run the races."
Bruce Nelson of Greenwood considers himself to be a master duck breeder, "Generations of breeding has gone into these ducks."
Brammier adds that, "It started out as 3 guys goin' out and racing ducks on a farm pond as a joke and after 30 years look around you and this is what it's turned into...it's a great event."
The Quack-off is not only just a fun time for the racers and spectators, it also raises money for a great cause as well. All of the proceeds go to the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department and this year they raised a record $9,000.
