The Curling Corhuskers are a team made up of 12 young men and women and because there is no ice specifically designed for curling in Lincoln, the UNL team travels to Omaha to compete on Sundays between October and March.
Matt Gibney says curling is often referred to as shuffleboard on ice, "You throw the stones down and try to hit a target and the object is to get your stones closer than your opponents stones and you score 1 point for every stone closer than your opponents."
Matt is one of the team's founding fathers, "I saw it in the 2006 Olympics and I thought I kind of want to try this out so a couple of us came up here, tried it out a few times and then once on the way home we said this is a lot of fun, we want to keep doing this." Next thing you know, UNL had a curling team and Nancy Myers has been the coach for the past 3 years.
Natalie Lips says her involvement in curling sets her apart from her fellow UNL students, "I love it because it's so different from most other sports. Not many people I know do curling so it's just a way that makes me unique from about 99 percent of campus."
In March, the UNL Curling Team will be competing in the National College Curling Championships in Chicago.
