People enjoy deer hunting for many different reasons. Some do it because they simply like to eat deer meat. Others do it because they love the great outdoors and they like to help control the deer population.
But the subject of this edition of Lance's Journal is a Lincoln man who hunts deer for a very different reason.
When Gary Jones reminisces about deer hunting trips from yesteryear, the thing he treasures the most is the quality time that he spent with his two sons.
Awhile back, Gary was searching for a way to preserve those treasured memories and he came up with what he calls "Antler Memory Pens."
He turned some dusty, old antlers into some valuable, new keepsakes for his boys.
Gary is very proud of the 100 pens that he's made and sold this past year, "I've had a number of people say, 'This is more like a work of art than an ink pen. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, 'Wow,' followed by, 'You made that?' I try not to take that personally."
Gary dreamed up the memory pen concept a year ago when he was wondering what he should get his two grown sons for Christmas, "When I'm gone someday, I wanted my boys to have something that they would be able to have with them everyday. That they could remember me."
