Only 3 colleges in Nebraska offer a glass blowing class. UNK, Chadron and Hastings College.
And at Hastings College it doesn't matter what students major in many of them take the hottest class on campus.
And the man who's led the way for the past 22 years is the focus of this edition of Lance's Journal.
Tom Kreager grew up near Toledo, Ohio. He entered Ohio State as a political science major. That was until he happened to take a ceramics class...that led to a glass blowing class.
Thirty-five years later, Tom is enjoying his glass blowing dream job at Hastings College. It's the best of two worlds for Tom, working with glass and students, "I'm actually honored to be able to teach glass blowing here at Hastings College, it's a small school and it's pretty unique that they have a glass blowing program and they're very supportive of it. I love being here, I don't really want to go anywhere else."
Every semester, glass blowing is the first class filled up during registration, that makes it one of the most popular classes on the Hastings College campus.
Tom says contrary to popular belief, glass blowing is rarely an individual activity, "When you're working with glass, you're working as a team so I'm never alone in there. Once you start you can't stop, there's no takin' a break so once you have the glass on the pipe you've got to keeping working cause if it gets cold it's gonna shatter so you have to keep it hot and goin'."
Tom is very excited about his classes participation in an upcoming charity event in Hastings. The Open Table program distributes sack lunches to those in need of a meal. On April 19th, the open table program will raise money by offering an etched glass bowl handmade by tom's class to each ticket holder.
