For many Nebraska football fans, the name Matt Davison is synonymous with one of the most famous plays in Husker history. The catch in Columbia, Missouri in 1997 not only made Matt a Husker legend, it also presented him with an incredible opportunity to use his celebrity in a very important way.
When Matt talks...kids listen. He has an undeniable energy that captures the attention of teenagers. Sandy Creek senior Chase Murman had good things to say about the football camp Matt put on at his high school, "He talks a lot about leadership and bullying, we've got to be a leader on the field and in the classroom."
Matt says the Creating Captains Foundation was born in the summer of 2008, "This is our third summer of doing football camps now and we've been all over the state pretty much and we do about a dozen camps a summer."
The Tecumseh native also uses school assemblies to share his message with students of all ages, "I have a speech that I give to kids and I really challenge them. I challenge them to make good decisions. What kind of person do you want to be? What kind of kid do you want to be?"
Matt is excited about he difference his foundation has made in the past 3 years, "We've been able to raise a lot of money through Creating Captains, we're a non-profit organization and the money we raise through Creating Captains goes to a program called The Backpack Program. We raise money and feeds kids across Nebraska. And that's probably the part of it that is most fulfilling to me is I don't know if a lot of people realize that there is thousands of kids in the state of Nebraska, right here in the Heartland that are hungry. Kids that don't eat from lunch on Friday til lunch on Monday. And how are you supposed to go to school and learn if you're not getting the proper nutrition. So the backpack program distributes food to these kids on the weekend all across the state. We're gonna put a big dent in that problem here in Nebraska through the backpack program."
