Many people say that one of their greatest fears is getting up and talking in front of strangers. But the person you're about to meet thinks just the opposite.
This outgoing Grand Island lady gets her kicks out of turning a frown upside down.
Back in 2000, Bea attended a Women's retreat in Columbus where she was asked what she had always wanted to be. She wrote down 'stand-up comedian.' Something clicked and at the age of 54, she was inspired to make her comedic dream come true.
Today, 12 years into her side-splitting stand up career, Bea Fiala is more commonly known as "Bea Funny."
Bea says her act is usually family friendly, "It's good and clean. It's like Ivory Soap, it's 99.9% clean."
It was early in life that Bea discovered that when you have 19 brothers and sisters you need to do something special to stand out in a crowd, "I'm the youngest of 20 kids, mom had 8, dad had 8 and they had 4 together and I always thought I was getting laughed at a lot so I thought I must be funny."
This Valentine, Nebraska native relates well to her fellow senior citizens, "At a senior expo we just talk about the silly things all of us do like maybe sittin' on the garage door opener and wondering why the garage keeps going up and down...it can happen."
Bea consistently proves that laughter is indeed the best medicine, "I am disabled although I look great and so when I'm doing comedy I feel like a million bucks cause I'm healing myself and hopefully my laughter is helping others to heal."
Fibromyalgia and a problematic back forced Bea to retire as a seamstress in 1996, but comedy has given her a late in life adventure.
