Ladies in the water aerobics class at the Beatrice YMCA have all the motivation they'll ever need and she usually can be found swimming over in the lap lane.
Her name is Lois Rush and she's quite a lady. Lois rush didn't learn to swim until she was 70 years old. But over the past 16 years, she has been making up for lost time. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday of every week, Lois makes the 90-mile round trip drive from Pawnee City to Beatrice to swim laps. And let's just say, her quick wit keeps it interesting for all of her adoring fans at the YMCA.
This 86 year old Omaha native says she learned to swim in a dirty Pawnee County lake and got chased out by the water snakes, "If I don't swim, I don't walk. I have arthritis and my knees are shot."
From her flawless freestyle to her backstroke, Lois swims out of necessity, "I swim literally because I can't go out and walk and if you don't use it you lose it!"
Her dedication can be illustrated through some very impressive numbers. Over the past decade, Lois tells me that she driven more than 20,000 miles to swim 150 miles.
