Every year, lives are changed and enhanced through the "Shape-Up GI Program" at the Grand Island YMCA.
Three years ago, Jeff Doose weighed 432 pounds. So he set out on a mission to transform his life. His monumental journey got underway in 2008, "I walked in the door, got my measurements, they tried to find a scale to weigh me, they could not. I went to the doctor's office the next morning and found out I weighed 432 pounds."
Step by step, Jeff was bound and determined to lose weight, "That first week, I lost 17 and a half pounds." And the weight continued to melt away, "In 14 weeks, while eating right and working out, I lost a 102 pounds. And this 41 year old Arlington native went on to shed yet another 100 pounds. From 430 pounds to 230 pounds. Jeff says, "It's one of the biggest things you could do in your life. It gives you vibrancy, it give you energy, it gives you a love of yourself and of and other people, it brings you closer to your spiritual relationship with God, it's just a total change in your person and your transformation and when you wake up everyday and what you want to do with your life and move forward and hit the next goal."
Jeff is now a volunteer instructor at the Grand Island YMCA....and a role model for people trying to make a change in their life, "I show them the picture that was taken just days before the program when I was in a 5 extra large tall shirt and now I wear a large or an extra large,"
Jeff adds, "The biggest accomplishment I've had so far in my life was to run a marathon." Last may, he finished the Lincoln Marathon in 3 hours and 53 minutes. Jeff says, "It was exhilarating...it was the best."
Up next for Jeff, he'll run in the Bill Seymour Half-Marathon in Grand Island on Labor Day weekend. And in a few months, Jeff will help other people change their lives, just like he did, as "Shape-Up G.I. 2012" gets underway in January. For more information... www.giymca.org
