The Lincoln Saltdogs opened their current homestand with a win on Thursday, beating St. Paul 6-2 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 40-36 on the season, 11-17 in the second half.

Saltdogs starter Chris Cullen (3-4) dominated the Saints lineup all night, allowing just two runs on three hits over eight innings of work. Cullen allowed two hits and a run in the first inning, but gave up just one more hit over the next seven innings while striking out six.

Lincoln, meanwhile, bounced back quickly to score two runs in the bottom of the first. Rafael Alvarez tied the game with an RBI double off of Saints starter Kyle Foster (1-6), and Juan Richardson put the Saltdogs in front with an RBI single. The ’Dogs added a run in the third inning when Alvarez walked, went to second on a balk and scored in a single by Roberto Alvarez.

St. Paul crept to within 3-2 by scoring a run without a hit in the top of the sixth, but Lincoln put the game away with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Pat Trettel drove in a run with an RBI double, and Jeremy Gillan picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice grounder. With the bases loaded and two out in the frame, Roberto Alvarez worked a 15-pitch at-bat against Saints reliever Jonathan Plefka. Alvarez fouled off nine pitches with two strikes, and finally earned an RBI walk on the 15th pitch.

Roberto Alvarez finished the night 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Gavin Dickey had the other multi-hit night for Lincoln, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Every starter buy Gillan had at least one hit. On the mound, Adam Daniels tossed a scoreless ninth to end the ballgame.

The two teams play game two of their three-game series Friday night at 7:05. Right-hander John James will make the start for the Saltdogs.
