Nebraska Wesleyan remained perfect on the season as they opened Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep over Midland Lutheran College in the 2010 home opener for the Prairie Wolves on Tuesday (Sept. 7) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln. NWU won in scores of 25-13, 25-15, 27-25.
The Prairie Wolves are now 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in GPAC play, while the Warriors fall to 5-5 overall, 0-1 in GPAC. NWU made quick work of the Warriors in the first two sets as they held Midland Lutheran to a hitting percentage of .000 in both of the first two sets. NWU hit .324 and .267 in the first two sets recording 13 kills in each set.
Set three was also controlled by the Prairie Wolves as they had match point for six straight points as Midland Lutheran rallied from 24-19 down to tie the match at 24-24. Finally, NWU stopped the run, then ended the match on an ace by Hannah Behrens.
No individual player reached double figures in kills for NWU as Kelsey Elman and Lindsay Coupens each had eight kills. Elman led NWU with 23 assists, while Coupens had three total blocks to lead the Prairie Wolves at the net. GPAC Player of the Week Laura Brammeier had 12 digs and seven kills but was held to a .071 hitting percentage.
Midland Lutheran was led by Halie Wewel and Katie Dettmer who each had seven kills.
Nebraska Wesleyan will now prepare for another important NCAA III Tournament this weekend as they travel to the Wartburg College Tournament.
