#1 Wayne State Use Fast Start to Roll Past Augustana

#1 Wayne State College jumped out to a 22-4 lead and held Augustana College to 20 percent shooting as the Wildcats rolled Augustana College 63-40 Saturday evening in the NCAA Division II Central Region Women's Basketball Tournament semi-finals played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats, with their 45th straight win at home, advance to Monday's Central Region final vs. Metro State with a 31-2 record while Augustana finishes the season at 24-7.

The Wildcats set the tone early taking a 22-4 lead with 12:14 to play in the half. After Augustana took a 4-3 lead making two of their first four shots, the Wildcats held the Vikings scoreless for 6:27 while forcing Augustana into eight straight missed shots while WSC built a huge lead early while starting 7 of 9 from the field and 4 of 5 from the three point line to build a 22-4 lead. The Wildcats took a pair of 22 point leads in the first half at 34-12 and 36-14 before finishing the first half with a 38-18 lead at intermission.

WSC shot 50 percent from the field in the first half (14 of 28) while holding the Vikings to just 23 percent on 6 of 26.

The second half turned into a physical defensive battle as both teams struggled shooting from the floor. WSC was just 4 of 21 from the field while Augustana made just 6 of 32 shots. The Wildcats held several leads of 25 points throughout the second half and finished with the 63-40 win.

Senior All-American forward Ashley Arlen recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcat attack followed by Clare Duwelius with 11 points and Ali Schwartzwald 10.

WSC finished the game shooting 18 of 49 for 36.7 percent, making 7 of 19 from the three point line and 20 of 22 from the charity stripe.

Augustana's top scorer was Molly Hayes with 10 points. The Vikings were 12 of 58 from the field for 20.7 percent including 3 of 19 behind the three point line and 13 of 17 at the charity stripe.

Wayne State won the rebounding battle over Augustana 44-37 thanks to 11 rebounds by Arlen and 10 more from Ellen Hansen. Augustana's top rebounder was Lydia Nelson with nine.

Wayne State (31-2) will host Metro State (27-3) in the Central Region final Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
