The Doane College baseball team learned this evening that their road to the NAIA World Series would go through Marion, Indiana. The Tigers were tagged as a fifth seed in the Marion Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round Tournament. Doane, the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season champions, will take a 33-19 record into the tournament.
Doane will face Mount Vernon Nazarene University (OH) on Thursday, May 10, in what will likely be a morning game. The winner of that contest would then play the top seed in the bracket, Concordia University (CA).
Doane and Mount Vernon Nazarene last met in Clearwater, Florida, during the 2010-11 season. Doane won the first meeting, 10-9, but dropped the second contest, 4-2.
Point Park University (PA) and Taylor University (IN) are the second and third seeds, respectively, in the bracket. There are not any records that indicate that the Tigers have faced any of the top three seeds in school history. Concordia is the defending NAIA National Champions.
The Tigers enter the NAIA Opening Round Tournament with one of the top pitching staffs in the nation. Opponents are batting .235 against Doane pitching, 12th in the NAIA. The staff has the 18th-best earned run average (3.42) and has struck out 386 batters on the season, 15th in the NAIA.
