Doane College Athletic Director Greg Heier announced the hiring of Renae Littrell as the head coach for the Tiger softball program. Littrell comes to Doane from Texas where she most recently served as head softball coach at 5A Earl Warren High School in San Antonio (5A is the sports classification in Texas for high schools with the largest enrollment).

She replaces Barry Mosley who announced his retirement in April. In her capacity as Head Softball Coach, Littrell will focus her full attention to recruiting and coaching the softball team as well as maintaining Ledon Softball Field as a premier practice and competition facility.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Littrell to the Doane community,” Heier commented. “She has extensive experience as both a player and coach at the high school and collegiate level. Her experience in recruiting, coupled with the exceptional relationships she has built in the softball community both within Nebraska and in other states, puts her in a great position to bring outstanding student-athletes to Doane College.

Most importantly, she left a firm conviction with all those involved in the search that she was the best person to assume leadership of the Tiger softball program and to continue to build on the program's past successes. We look to consistently compete for conference championships under Coach Littrell's leadership.” Heier added that the hire was strategic and intended to produce results similar to those of the baseball team at Doane, where Coach Jeremy Jorgensen uses a strong junior varsity program to develop outstanding players at the varsity level.

Littrell began her coaching career at the collegiate level as an assistant, first with Butler County Community College and then with Hutchinson Community College, both in Kansas. She gained valuable experience recruiting players from the United States, Canada and in Europe. She also played a key role in awarding scholarships and in overseeing the academic progress of student-athletes.

A decorated collegiate player, Littrell was named Freshman-of-the-Year at Butler County Community College. There, she was a two-time all-conference and all-region selection. After earning her associate degree, she played a year at Missouri Western State College and was an all-conference player. Her coaching philosophy and values will intertwine well with Doane’s mission. Littrell believes in developing student-athletes with integrity, confidence, intensity, composure and commitment.

Doane is coming off a runner-up finish in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) after posting a 13-5 mark. The Tigers graduate three players and return five starting position players and their top two pitchers from last year’s squad. The potential to take the program to the next level and the support from the institution were enticing to Littrell.

“I see how close this program is to being on top (of the conference) and I have a great desire to lead the program in that direction. After visiting Doane and exploring this option for my family, I saw how supportive everyone is to get this program to that point. As a coach, nothing is more exciting than that!”

Littrell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Masters of Education degree in Teacher Leader Administration from Wichita State University, while also earning hours toward a Masters of Education degree in Sports Administration.

Doane Athletics is coming off its best all-around athletic season since joining the Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2000. Ten teams placed in the Top Two of the GPAC in their respective sport, eight athletes earned player-of-the-year honors in the conference and there were a record number of NAIA & GPAC Scholar-Athletes as well as Capital One Academic All-Americans.
