Midland University Football Drops Homecoming Game to No.17 Hastings College, 20-17

Fremont, Neb. - Midland University was handed a tough, 20-17 loss by No. 17 Hasting College on Saturday. In what was Midland's Homecoming game, the Warriors led the undefeated Broncos until losing the lead late in the fourth quarter.

“This was a heartbreaker for us today,” said Josh Gehring, Midland University head football coach. “But I’m proud of the way our guys fought today. We can learn from it, and our team is continuing to cultivate the character we ultimately want.”

The Warrior offense accrued 288 yards of total offense on the day. Quarterback Mike Karls completed 20 passes for 140 yards. Karls also led Midland on the ground with 62 rushing yards. Kene Martin added 51 yards on the ground, and Larreon White tallied 43 yards and one rushing touchdown. Jesse Bubke was the leading Warrior receiver with 65 yards on eight catches. Dominic Blood also added a rushing score.

Midland’s defense was dominant throughout three quarters, holding the Broncos to only five points before the final quarter of play. Clete Vrbka led the Warrior defense with 10.5 tackles. Blake Merrit totaled 7.5 tackles while Nick Carlson and Micah Fisher added one interception apiece.

The Warriors opened the game's scoring on their second drive of the game with a 39-yard field goal by Treyton Buresh. The score capped an 11-play, 58-yard drive and put Midland up 3-0 at 4:43 in the first
quarter.

The Warriors held the Broncos scoreless throughout the first quarter before surrendering a 20-yard field goal at 14:57. The Hastings field goal tied the game, 3-3.

The Warriors regained the lead at 8:27 in the second quarter with a one-yard Dominic Blood touchdown run. The score capped a 14-play, 79-yard drive and put Midland up, 10-3.

The Broncos picked up two points at 3:59 as an errant Midland snap resulted in a safety. The safety wrapped up the first half scoring and put Midland's halftime lead at 10-5.

The Warrior opened up the second half with a four-yard touchdown run by Larreon White at 2:33 in the third quarter. The touchdown widened Midland's lead to 17-5.

Midland's defense continued to be solid throughout the third quarter holding Hastings scoreless. However, the Broncos connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass at 9:26 in the fourth quarter and successfully completed the two-point conversion to cut Midland's lead to 17-13.

Hastings found their first lead of the game at 4:15 in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Bronco touchdown put Hastings ahead, 20-17.

Midland drove late but was unable to regain the lead in the game’s remainder.

The loss puts Midland at 2-4 on the season and in the conference. The Warriors will travel to face Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
