Josh Ostrom singled between through the right side of the infield to drive in Alex Heideman for the game-winning RBI as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Manhattan Christian College, 3-2, in eight innings to complete a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln. The Prairie Wolves won game one, 10-2.
With the doubleheader sweep the Prairie Wolves even their overall record at 15-15 and record their 10th straight victory which is their longest win streak since the 1998 season.
Heideman had a pair of home runs to lead the Prairie Wolves in the first game. The junior outfielder finished 2-4 with three RBI sending a pair of homers over the left field fence, including one over the scoreboard.
Matt Schommer pitched four innings allowing just one run to pick up his second victory of the season.
Also getting in on the offensive attack in game one was Pete Sitorius going 2-4 with two RBI. Griffin DePriest also had two hits.
In the second game, NWU jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Heideman reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Beau Kelly.
That would be the only run NWU could score until the 6th inning.
Evan Ehmen started for NWU and threw a no-hitter through the first three innings, his only innings of work.
The Crusaders scored a run in the 4th and took the lead in the top of the 6th inning.
The Prairie Wolves tied the game in the sixth as Heideman and Ostrom had back-to-back doubles.
Heideman and Ostrom teammed up again in the 8th for the game-winner. Heideman doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ostrom's game-winner.
Nebraska Wesleyan now has their final home game of the season this Saturday (Apr. 21) as they face Morningside College in a GPAC doubleheader. Both teams are tied for second in the league race, one game out of first.
