Scores of players gathered at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings for a frigid "Snowball Softball" tournament. There was little snow, but plenty of cold temperatures -- and team spirit.

Softball tournament member Anthony Smith advised prospective players on how to dress for the tournament: "Very, very, very warm clothes, and long-johns, and coats!"

The temperature on the field was 18 degrees or lower, and with the wind chill factor, the "real feel" was estimated to be about 8 degrees.

The players' roster was full, but fans were few and far between, and those who did attend were well blanketed against the cold.

Despite the winter weather, players like Tara Hardenberger said that it was worth the effort: "It's cold, but fun. It's nice to get back out on the field."
