SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan defensive lineman Russell Walton has been named this week’s GPAC/Hauff Sports Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played on November 3. He is the fourth NWU defensive player to earn GPAC Defensive Player of Week honors this season.
Walton, a senior from Franklin, Neb., was a disruptive force on the defensive line as Nebraska Wesleyan shut out the Dakota Wesleyan offense in a 17-0 victory on Senior Day at Abel Stadium. Walton had seven total tackles (five solo) and was one of the main reasons the Prairie Wolves defense held DWU to justeight total rush yards. Walton and the NWU defense held the NAIA’s 4th leading rusher to just 17 yards. Walton also had two tackles-for-loss, a quarterback sack, a pass breakup and was constantly pressuring the quarterback.
This year, Walton is third on the team with 55 total tackles and has 11.0 tackles-for-loss to rank in the top 10 in the GPAC. He now has 2.5 quarterback sacks and five quarterback hurries.
For his career, Walton has gone over 200 career tackles to become the 11th player in NWU history with 200career tackles. He has 212 career stops with 34.0 TFLs, and 14.0 QB sacks. The Franklin H.S., graduate was a preseason NAIA All-American and has earned First-Team All-GPAC honors the past two seasons.
NWU has now won four straight games to improve to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC. The Prairie Wolves will look to close out the 2012 season with a fifth consecutive win this Saturday (Nov. 10) as they travel to Hastings, Neb., to face Hastings College.
