Cornhusker Games Torch Run- Steve Ross Reports
The early deadline to register for the 2012 Cornhusker State Games is Monday. Entries received online by midnight or postmarked on or before June 18, will receive a discount of $5 for individuals or $3 per team member for teams. The final registration deadline for most sports is Monday, July 2.
This weekend, through the hot sun and high winds, the torch-bearer and his escorts carried the flame to their Grand Island destination - the Stuhr museum. It was just one leg of their eleven-hundred mile relay run, all to herald the 2012 Cornhusker State Games. Runners have carried the torch from the Wyoming border, and they won't quit until they reach Lincoln.
"It's an Olympic style sports festival for amateur athletes. We invite people all over Nebraska to come. This year it's going to be July 20th to the 29th; there's over sixty sports you can participate in. You don't have to be, you know, an extreme athlete, you can be the couch potato," said Nebraska Sports Council representative, Scott Dwyer.
The games are open to all ages. Ten year-old Mckenna Schroeder took on the exercise of escorting the torch, but not for glory.
"So when we get older we'll be able to be healthy," said Schroeder.
