A convicted murderer is back on trial after a run in with another inmate turns deadly.
Mohamed Abdulkadir is charged with first degree murder in the death of Michael Grandon.
Both men were convicted murders and while serving time together at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, they had a fatal confrontation.
The prosecution rested Tuesday and Wednesday the defense pleaded its case. The defense said no one saw the fight start, Grandon brought the knife to the fight, and Abdulkadir acted in self defense.
Wednesday the jury heard testimony from an inmate who claims he watched the deadly fight. The witness originally told investigators he didn't see anything. He says he lied because he didn't want to get in trouble and didn't want to be involved with it in any way. Wednesday, he changed his story backing up the self defense claims.
The inmate said he saw Grandon start the fight by punching Abdulkadir, then reached into his pocket to pull something out. He said both men reached for the item Grandon pulled out and wrestled for it. He couldn't tell what the item was but knew it was a weapon because of Abdulkadir's reaction. After the struggle, he saw Grandon taken away from the area on a gurney.
Abdulkadir is currently serving 25 to 50 years for aiding and abetting second degree murder in Grand Island dating back to 2009.
Grandon had been convicted of two 2007 murders in North Platte.
