Reporter: Associated Press

Twenty-six Nebraska employers are receiving a state award for efforts to promote healthy habits among their employees.

The recipients of the 2012 Governor's Workplace Wellness Award will be honored at a series of luncheons throughout the state in September and October. Gov. Dave Heineman announced the new winners Friday, bringing the total number of recipients in the five last years to 153.

The award was created to recognize Nebraska employers that develop successful programs that encourage wellness.

Nebraska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joann Schaefer says reported fruit consumption among participating employees has increased by 22 percent, and cholesterol screenings are up 12 percent. Heavy drinking -- defined as 30 drinks a month for women and 60 for men -- has fallen from 10 percent to 0 percent.
