Safety Day Attracts 300 Kids - Bill Steckis Reports

It's more than just an exercise in fire safety. Safety agencies hand out stickers in hopes that the message from today sticks.

"If we can help by showing them a fire engine or a firetruck or teach them about water safety and keep them safe this summer, that's our ultimate goal at the end of the day," said Dan Ripley of the Lincoln Fire Department.

Fire Safety Day at the zoo started with a one mile run and continued to valuable safety demonstrations.

More than 300 kids participated in the 29th annual free event that promotes fire safety, water safety and the importance of kids trusting law enforcement at fire officials. Kids also got a chance to see first hand what it's like to make a 9-1-1 call.

The adults know the script, but the message resonated to the kids.

8 year old Blaine Loll got the message loudly and clearly. "So it's important for kids to learn how to swim and even it they do go swimming with their parents, they should still wear a life jacket."

"I think it's great for the kids to learn these kinds of things especially at a young age because they look up to the parents and for the parents to get out and be active with them, it takes a lot of work and they will remember this for the rest of their lives," said Chelsea Schaaf who took her two children to the event.

So mind and body work in unison. Just like the 12 agencies are today for the kids.
