Lincoln Winery Worries about Weather - Laura Berry Reports

An early spring has led to brisk business for many Nebraska wineries, but the atypical temperatures have not been warmly received by all.

A possible freeze following a warmer than average start to spring has one local winery worried about this year's crop.

Jennifer Reeder of Deer Springs Winery said "Even though we've enjoyed it, it's not the best situation for those of us growing wine grapes in the state."

Reeder added " the vines are about 4-6 weeks ahead of time, when they start vining and leafing out. Most of the vines in our vineyard have some buds on them and some shoots and leaves. It's possible if it gets down below freezing we could have some serious damage that will diminish our grape crop this season."

The winery could lose between 10 and 60 percent of this year's crop if temperatures get cold enough and stay chilly for a long enough period of time.
