More Than 35,000 Still Without Power in West Virginia

Posted: 4:29 PM Jul 10, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

The work continues for utility crews in West Virginia, where more than 35,000 customers are still without electricity.

The power outages started last month, when violent storms ripped across the mid-Atlantic, knocking out power to more than 3 million people across the region.

A cold front brought more storms to West Virginia over the weekend, forcing crews to halt repair work temporarily. While the weather was less damaging than the June 29 storm, it was enough to knock out power for some who didn't lose it the first time and others who had gotten back on the grid.

Appalachian Power says it has now restored service to at least 95 percent of affected customers.

State and federal officials are conducting preliminary damage assessments. Those reports will determine eligibility for federal disaster assistance.
