At least 12 houses have been deemed uninhabitable after a tornado hit the upstate New York city of Elmira.
Chemung County spokeswoman Karen Miner says an assessment is still ongoing to see how many other structures were damaged by the storm.
The tornado touched down about 4 p.m. Thursday packing winds of up to 110 mph. It was part of a strong storm system that punished much of the northeast on Thursday.
