Huge Fire Burns to Edge of 3 Small California Towns

A fire that threatens thousands of homes in Northern California is just 35 percent contained. With more firefighters arriving on the scene, officials say fire crews have been able to improve their fire lines.

Shifting winds have helped keep the blaze away from homes additional homes. Nearly 1,900 firefighters are battling the blaze in rugged, heavily forested terrain.

The blaze has destroyed seven homes. Melted satellite dishes can be seen alongside the remains of burned furniture and charred refrigerators.

In Idaho, firefighters are digging in to defend the town of Featherville against a fire that has chewed through more than 141 square miles in the central part of the state. The town has been evacuated. Firefighters say if the flames reach Featherville, they're ready with a planned burnout operation intended to slow the blaze.

Firefighters in Washington state are hoping to fully contain a wildfire that has burned dozens of homes about 75 miles east of Seattle.

Smaller fires are burning in Colorado and Utah after being sparked by lightning over the weekend.
