WEB EXTRA: Police Explain how Shooting and Crash are Related
A quiet summer day in one Lincoln neighborhood was interrupted by violence and gunfire Tuesday afternoon around 2 pm.
It all went down in the 1600 block of Prairie Lane.
Isaac Durr and his neighbor, 40-year-old Scott Brus, apparently got into a fight over something, which resulted in shots fired. Durr was hit multiple times.
When Brus fled, neighbor Michele Getzschman came to Durr's aid.
"I saw the gunshot wound on his arm or shoulder area and his hand was bleeding and he was laying on his stomach," said Getzschman. "He said his gut was hit and his leg. He was just yelling that he had been shot. I just stayed with him till the police came."
Authorities say Brus led police on a chase. They say Brus hit two cars and a power poll near 68th and Havelock. Officers found Brus dead at the scene. Police said Brus shot himself in the head.
Durr is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police said the argument started over Durr's barking dog. They believe the dog was an ongoing problem between the neighbors.
Back in January, police were called to Durr's house when Brus complained the dog was defecating in his back yard.
According to police, Durr told them his dog is not allowed to run free. Officers were not able to find spaces in Durr's fence yard where the dog could escape.
Durr does not have a criminal history with LPD.
In 2008, LPD cited Brus for illegal fireworks. He was also picked up by the Nebraska State Patrol for DUI.
Police say Durr's two-year-old daughter almost witnesses the violent crime. They say Durr was working in the yard with his daughter when Brus approached him and began screaming at him.
Durr then picked up his daughter and gave her to his wife, who took the girl inside. Police says the argument continued until Brus pulled out a handgun and shot Durr four to six times.
