Puppy Plunge

Dozens of Kearney canines got their chance on Sunday to go from hot dogs to cool pups.

Centennial Pool, which closed for the season to two legged clients on Saturday, held its summer "Puppy Plunge" event on Sunday afternoon.

Dog owners had to show current animal vaccination records to get their pets into the event. Proceeds from the swim will go to the Kearney Area Animal Shelter and the Kearney Dog Park.

Organizers say pups of all sizes were ready to paddle in the big puddle.

"This is our puppy plunge, and what happens here is we close the pool to our public, and and we open it to dogs. So today is a special day for the dogs. We have smaller dogs that come early on, and they get to swim. We have a nice zero depth entry here in the pool so the dogs can walk in and walk out. We also have the larger dogs will come later this afternoon, and they get to jump in," explained City of Kearney Department of Recreation staff member Joe Krepel.

Some dogs were eager to dive in and some of the canines needed a little coaxing to get into the swim of things.
