Lincoln Public School District Announces Changes for 2012-2013 Year

Changes at Lincoln Public Schools, Erika Tallan Reports

School starts for Lincoln students Tuesday, August 14th. The Lincoln Public School District has many new additions. Here's a breakdown:

Two high schools have new principals. Vann Price returns to North Star this year. She was promoted from vice principal at the school.

Brent Toalson is the new principal at Lincoln Southeast, his alma mater.

You might notice some construction at Belmont Elementary School. It's the future home of the Educare building. The state of the art early childhood center will provide all day, year round care for children from birth to age 5. The project is a partnership with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Susan A. Buffet Early Childhood Foundation and LPS. It opens in January.

McPhee and Hartley Elementary Schools are moving back into their permanent, newly renovated buildings. They were shifted to temporary sites last year.

To handle its student load, Roper Elementary School has a new building to accommodate growth. It'll house 4th and 5th graders. The new building also gives the school a unique feature, a second library.

Dawes Middle School is in its second year of opening and seeing 20% growth. It's added another 80-plus students to its population.

Kloefkorn Elementary School is opening its doors for the first time ever this year! We'll give you a tour of the futuristic school Wednesday morning!

Around 36,750 students are expected to attend Lincoln Public Schools this year.

That's up by about 300 students compared to last year.

School officials say growth is slightly smaller than in years past because of the change in kindergarten age requirements.
