1 in 3 Nebraska Students Below New Science Standards

Just one week after the start of school, state education officials release new test scores tracking student progress.

The Nebraska Department of Education released the 2012 Nebraska State Accountability, or NESA, test results.

Overall, reading scores improved by almost 6% from 2010.

74% of Nebraska students are now meeting or exceeding expectations.

Math scores improved by 4.5% from 2011.

67% of students are now proficient in math.

This was the first year for new science and reading tests, so Education Commissioner Dr. Roger Breed says those results should be considered baseline numbers and can't be compared to past tests.

In the new 2012 science test, one in three students scored below state expectations.

Only 67% met or exceeded expectations.

In the new 2012 writing test, the results were a little better: 73% of students are proficient.
