Zip Cars A New Transportation Option - Bonney Bowman Reports at 5

A transportation trend which started in bigger cities across the country makes its way to Lincoln.

It's called Zipcar and its arrived at the University of Nebraska downtown campus.

Four cars will soon be available for students to rent on an hourly or daily basis.

Two of them will be in the parking lot at 17th and Vine and the other two on the top floor of the parking garage at 10th and T Street.

Users go to the Zipcar website, pay the $25 sign up fee, then get an access card mailed to them.

They can then reserve cars via a smart phone app, unlock the car with their card, and drive off.

It's $7 an hour or $66 for the whole day.

The cars are fully insured against theft or crash.

University officials say this is a service students had been asking for and about a dozen are already signed up.

Students have to be 18 to drive the car in town and 21 to go out of town.

Faculty, staff, and community members can also sign up.

You must have a good driving record to use the Zipcars.
