The Nebraska-Kearney football team has been picked to finish sixth in both the coaches and media preseason MIAA (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) polls.
The polls were released Monday morning in conjunction with “MIAA Football Media Day.” All 15 head coaches are in Downtown Kansas City speaking to various media members.
In both polls, the Lopers come in behind the five schools that have dominated the league the past decade; defending national champion Pittsburg State, NW Missouri State, Washburn, Missouri Western State and Central Missouri.
UNK plays four of these schools this fall (NW, WU, Mo. West and UCM) with three of those games coming in the first month of the season; Washburn (Aug. 30th), Missouri Western (Sept. 15th) and Northwest (Sept. 22nd).
In the coaches poll, the Lopers tallied 122 points to come in behind Pitt State (192; 12 first place votes), Northwest (184; two first place votes), Missouri Western (165; one first place vote), Washburn (154) and Central Missouri (153).
On the media side, UNK picked up 390 points, coming in right behind UCM (393). The first four were PSU (538; 24 first place), Northwest (524; 11 first place), Mo. Western (456; one first place) and Washburn (447).
The Lopers begin spring practice this Thursday morning with the season starting August 30th at Washburn.
