Crossfit Heartland Heating Up GI

Picture working out in the 100 degree heat, forging fitness inside a pressure cooker even warmer than the heat index.

That in a nutshell, or metal shed, is Crossfit Heartland.

"It's kindoff intimidating at first, but I'd recommend anyone try it out," said Erin Martinez.

We have a population thats being introduced to Crossfit and they like it," says Crossfit Heartland owner Jared Stockwell. "They're seeing results."

The gameplan is a generalized, non specified, style of training focused on achieving fitness across a broad spectrum. Recently, it's been popularized by Reebok and the Cossfit Gmes on ESPN

"In 2007 there were 18 to 27 gyms nationally," said Stockwell. "Now there are 3,400 world wide."

An October 11th 'Men's Health' article makes a case for Crossfit potentially being dangerous.

Some of it's workouts includes rounds of technical olympic style lifts until exhaustion.

Movements that take time to perfect.

"It's not dangerous if you do the right things and if you're being smart," said member Scott Rief.

"We know our people pretty well so if we see your technique is off or you're using too much we can tell you to back off the weight," said Stockwell.

That weight is coupled with Crossfit's motto; high intensity, constantly varied, functional movement.

And though it's gaining popularity here in Nebraska, there are only 4 communities with gyms. They are Grand Island, Kearney, Omaha, and Lincoln.
