Glad to be Home

If you haven't heard by now, I had the amazing opportunity to travel with nearly 50 10/11 viewers on a fantastic land and cruise trip to Alaska. I was gone for a whopping 14 days. And while the sights we saw were breath taking and the group I traveled with was fun and adventurous - I missed my boys something terrible.

So as you can imagine, there were a lot of calls home. I always felt better after talking with Tyler and hearing Jordan happily chiming in in the background. But there were some places we couldn't get cellular service, and no communication was rough. The last part of our trip was a four day cruise and after we got off the ship, I was more than ready to get home. But we had one more night in Seattle.

Needless to say, when we arrived at our house, I jumped out of the car. In retrospect I feel terrible now because I remember as soon as we pulled up - our neighbor started talking to us about how hot it was while we were gone - and without thinking - I just darted off right into the house.

As soon as we walked inside, Tyler screamed and ran up to us and gave us big hugs. Jordan just grinned from ear to ear and when I went to changed his diaper, he looked up and said, "mama." He has never said that without prompting! What a welcome home!

That night Todd and I took the boys out for ice cream. We definitely took our time putting them to bed, too. And for the first time in two weeks, I had complete peace of mind. That felt good.

Of course, our parents took wonderful care of the boys and we couldn't thank them enough. But now Tyler and Jordan are even more spoiled (I didn't even know that was possible).

It is great to be home!

I'd love to hear your stories about how you managed to cope with time away from your kids - or if you could never bring yourself to go away without your kids..

I, too, enjoyed reading your blog and am remembering almost exactly 25 years ago when my husband and I had the opportunity to go to Europe for 21 days. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity so we jumped at it. We then had a 4 year old son and a 9 month old son. They stayed with my parents the entire time. Of course, this was long before cell phones and communication from a foreign country was difficult. I think we called back maybe twice. Upon our arrival home, our 9 month old only wanted grandma. This was heartwrenching for me but I knew we had been gone a long time. Our 4 year old was glad to see us and was fine. It only took a few hours and our baby again knew who his mommy was. How exciting for you to hear your son say "mama"! Glad you had a great trip!

I enjoyed reading this blog. It made me look back over the years. I have 2 children now grown. But I can remember when they were babies how I couldn't wait for them to talk and walk. Then when that started it seemed I couldn't wait for them to be quiet and go to bed at night. But all in all, they are both the reasons I am who I am today. I still don't like it when I haven't seen or heard from them for three or four days. Ah...but they now have lives of their own. I lost my mom to COPD in 2006. She was my world. She loved the 4th of July. I think mainly because it brought us all together. I never realized how much she continued to do even after we were all grown and gone. Thanks..for reading this and for your positive outlook and compassion that shows in your reporting.
