The fourth season in the Bo Pelini era at Nebraska ended with a 9-4 record following a 30-13 loss to South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl; and there’s hope for even more wins this season in Lincoln.
Nebraska returns 16 starters from a season ago, but lose major depth on the offensive line, following the departures of Mike Caputo, Yoshi Hardrick and Marcel Jones.
The Nebraska defense, like the offense, must replace veteran starters as Austin Cassidy, Jared Crick, Lavonte David and Alfonzo Dennard have graduated.
The good news for the Huskers is this – junior quarterback Taylor Martinez and senior running back Rex Burkhead are back for the Big Red, which will help Nebraska this season. Martinez threw for 2,089 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Rex Burkhead ran for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns a season ago.
Nebraska finished third in the Legends Division a year ago and are picked to finish in the same spot this year behind Michigan and Michigan State.
Nebraska’s non-conference schedule begins with a home game against Southern Miss. The Huskers go on the road to Pasadena, California to face UCLA and then return home for the final two games in non-conference play against Arkansas State and Idaho State.
The Huskers open Big Ten play at Memorial Stadium against Wisconsin and then hit the road for two-straight games against Ohio State and Northwestern.
Other key games for the Big Red is a home game against Michigan, a road game in East Lansing against Michigan State and a home game against Penn State and Minnesota before closing the season on the road against Iowa.
