Buffalo County Board Chairman Richard Pierce and his wife, Janna, have been indicted on one count of bankruptcy fraud.
A statement issued Tuesday by the office of the U.S. Attorney for Nebraska says the Pierces were indicted Monday and are accused of failing to disclose to bankruptcy officials and creditors nearly $159,000 of Janna Pierce's income.
That money was for commissions on grants Janna Pierce had written in 2004 for Buffalo County while her husband was on the county board. But she didn't submit a bill to the county until 2010, which the board -- including her husband -- voted to pay.
Federal officials believe that delay was intended to hide the income from those owed money by the Pierces, who filed for bankruptcy in 2003.
