It's an ongoing crime that's hard to pin point. Captain Kerry Mehlin with Grand Island Criminal Investigations Division says this type of crime comes and goes.
"About nine or ten months ago we had an uptick in this stuff and we made some arrests and it went back down. Now it's back again," said Mehlin.
The Grand Island Police Department is warning local business owners about counterfeit credit cards. Authorities have received complaints that fake cards are being used in the Grand Island area.
"They are using account numbers that have been stolen. They are putting them on their own cards which can be blank stock cards they purchased on the internet, or gift cards, credit cards, anything with a stripe on it," said Mehlin.
Local business owner Stefani Brown says she just received an email this morning. Brown says she and her employees will have to be more aware at the cash register.
"I'll definitely have them all read this letter and sign and initial it. And just making it a common practice to check the numbers on the back of the card," said Brown.
As for prevention, Captain Mehlin says be persistent in tracking your spending.
"As long as you keep track of your card, and most banks, most financial institutions will waive it if it's criminal activity... they'll waive the entire fee. But check your statements."
