Sycamore Underpass will be closed beginning Tuesday, May 1st.
From the City of Grand Island:
The city of Grand Island Streets Division will soon be performing pavement maintenance on the Sycamore Street underpass.
The underpass will be closed beginning Tuesday, May 1, with repairs estimated to take up to eight weeks depending on the weather.
Repairs will include removing and replacing failing concrete panels, replacing the existing roadway lighting, and possibly rebuilding a storm water catch basin box.
In addition, the large project will give the Public Works Department the ability to evaluate other aspects of the underpass such as subgrade condition and drainage as the concrete is removed.
Given the findings from the underpass study conducted by the Engineering Division last fall and recent repairs to storm water structures, the Public Works Department has determined that concrete pavement repair performed by the Streets Division will be the most cost effective and timely reaction.
The pavement repair will increase motorist safety in the underpass and eliminate the need for emergency pavement repairs until a complete rehab of the underpass is designed and funded.
