The City of Grand Island has been ordered to hire a fire chief or interim fire chief.
A lawsuit filed by Fire Captain Scott Kuehl said leaving the position vacant of a qualified fire chief is a public safety issue. With the vacant
position, the four fire division chiefs have been reporting to City Administrator Mary Lou Brown.
Hall County District Judge James Livingston issued the order to appoint a chief by June 11th, citing Nebraska law.
It states that cities with more than 37,500 people are required to have a full-time fire chief.
City Attorney Robert Sivick would not comment Thursday, except to say that he is reviewing the judge's order.
