The Nebraska Supreme Court has affirmed the first-degree murder conviction of a Norfolk man serving live in prison for the fatal stabbing of his former girlfriend.

Leodan Alarcon-Chavez was convicted of first-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony and tampering with a witness in the March 2010 death of 30-year-old Maria Villareal.

Prosecutors say Alarcon-Chavez stabbed Villareal in her apartment while he was awaiting trial for allegedly threatening to kill her several months earlier.

In his appeal, Alarcon-Chavez said the Madison County District Court should have sustained his motion to suppress evidence, among other things. He also said that the prosecutor's closing remarks were so inflammatory that his conviction should be reversed.

The Nebraska Supreme Court said Friday it found no merit in Alarcon-Chavez's arguments.
