The number of cattle in Nebraska feedlots has grown 6 percent over the past year to 2.53 million as of April 1.
The Nebraska office of the Agriculture Department's National
Agricultural Statistics Service says the current numbers are the
largest April inventory since the count began in 1994.
The figures are from feedlots with capacities of greater than 1,000 cattle.
Nationwide, the number of cattle and calves on feed was 11.5 million. That's 2 percent higher than April 2011.
Placements in Nebraska feedlots during March totaled 440,000
head, up 13 percent from last year. Marketings of fed cattle during
March totaled 460,000 head, up 7 percent from 2011. Both of those
figures are the highest in count records.
