Police Prepare for Busy Roads

Updated: Sat 10:44 PM, Aug 18, 2012

The Nebraska State Fair and Labor Day weekend are two big events that will also mean big traffic for Grand Island.

For Grand Island Police, that means hitting the street in full force.

"Promote safety on the highway, reduce accidents, reduce fatalities, reduce injuries," were the goals listed by GIPD Chief Steve Lamken.

It's part of the "You drink, you drive, you lose" campaign funded by the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.

"They provide overtime dollars and costs for operating vehicles and that, so that we can go out and do some special enforcement that we would not have the resources to do otherwise," Lamken said.

He said it comes at a crucial time for DUI special enforcement.

"Holidays are times when people tend to party more," Lamken said. "People tend to drink more."

And, some local drivers said that's why they think it's necessary to have extra bodies keeping an eye out for drunk drivers.

"It's a great idea," local driver Jaden Roberts said. "I mean, we've got to really crack down on what's happening."

Lamken said just getting the word out about the increased patrol is part of the battle.

"Enforcement is a deterrent," he said. "When people know there's special enforcement out there, I think you have a greater deterrent."

That's something that will be especially important later this month.

"If they remove some people who shouldn't be driving from the roadway, it makes it that much safer," Lamken said.

Roberts agreed.

"It's safe for my family and my friends and my relatives," he said.

Other local law enforcement agencies are also taking part in the campaign, including Hastings Police and Nebraska State Patrol.

The special enforcement will run through Labor Day.
