The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Nebraska farmers are making good progress with the soybean and corn harvests even though last week's rain slowed the work.

But the rain that fell in Nebraska did help suppress fires that were sparked by farmers using combines to harvest dry fields. The USDA issued its weekly crop report on Tuesday.

About 74 percent of the corn crop appears to be in good or excellent shape. And about 19 percent of the corn has been harvested, which is near the average of 20 percent.

The USDA says about 78 percent of the soybean crop is in good or excellent condition. About 63 percent of the soybean crop has been
harvested, and that is well ahead of the average of 49 percent done.
