Five Nebraska cities will increase their local sales taxes on October 1.

Nebraska Tax Commissioner Doug Ewald says the sales tax will increase in Brainard, Clay Center, Howells, Randolph and David City.

Local sales tax rates in the state can be set at 0.5 percent, 1 percent or 1.5 percent.

Brainard, Clay Center, Howells and Randolph are all establishing a local sales tax at the rate of 1 percent.

David City has decided to increase its local sales tax to 1.5 percent from its existing 1 percent rate.

After these changes are made, 111 Nebraska cities will have a 1 percent sales tax and 75 cities will have a 1.5 percent sales tax.

Rich people do not spend money in the towns listed in this article for anything other than local well-healed individuals (few and far between) might need for an evening in front of 10/11 news: some alcohol and tobacco. Kids spend more in these towns. Tax them.

Too bad towns cannnot tax alchohol and tobacco. Why is that not an option? Sounds like a darn good idea!

Huskers4Prosperity, averagejoe's rant isn't Beck-inpired; if it were, he wouldn't have said that the top 10 pct don't pay their fair share, he'd have said they pay more than their fair share. It was more of a socialist-inspired rant.

I support city leaders in their ability to make the tough choice. Nobody likes high taxes, but everybody likes nice roads, clear sidewalks, and clean water. Average Joe is missing the point with his knee-jerk, Glenn Beck inspired rant.

the problem isn't higher spending, its LESS spending by governments and individuals that send the economy into a downward spiral! Localities have few options but raise taxes, but the people are already paying exorborent property taxes! its simply a death spiral! don't get me wrong here, taxes should be RAISED! who should shoulder more of the tax burden? The uber-wealthy, thats right, THEY SHOULD PAY MORE! not your everyday working American that is already struggling...the top 10 percent wealthiest families have been GIVEN A FREE RIDE WITH THE BUSH TAX CUTS. The fact is the rich don't pay their fare share in taxes. The fact is the rich don't spend their money, they SAVE SAVE SAVE. problem is all that does is create bubbles and recessions and depressions...so its about taxing in the RIGHT PLACES, and forcing the rich to either spend their ill-gotten gains (anyone who is rich has had to step on toes to get there), or tax their ill gotten gains. Its there choice, SPEND IT OR TAX IT

Remember a tax only happens when the goverment spends to much. We need to fight spending first!

and city leaders wonder why people move away! could it be that they would like to live in a state that doesn't tax them into oblivion! young people already are leaving this state in droves! just another reason!!!
