Young and old, visitors to the 141st Nebraska State Fair are swarming the grounds, in search of food-on-a-stick, livestock, and dozens of exhibits.

"People from 30 states, plus Canada, and almost all of the counties have been represented from Nebraska," said Sallie Atkins, Chair - Nebraska State Fair Board.

For many fair-goers, one day is not enough.

That is where campgrounds like the brand new site east of the midway come in handy.

"Our hopes were to have this new RV campground finished by the fair, but Mother Nature had other ideas. So, they're still working as diligently as they can. What reservations we have, and the part on the waiting list, is camped here on the part that is done," said Atkins.

Fifty-two pads have been built thus far. When complete, there will be 215 spots, plus the 75 on the Fonner Park Grounds.

"Grand Island doesn't have a lot of campground facilities, so we just saw a need, and hoped to be able to fill that," said Atkins.

Not only are campgrounds full, hotels are seeing a spike in business as well.

Nathan Delate, General Manager at Rodeway Inn, said the only other time he has seen it this busy, is during Husker Harvest Days.

"For the last couple months, we've been staying pretty full because of all the construction projects going on in the area, but usually not full like this every night," said Delate. "Since the 27th, when everybody was coming in, we've been staying, if not full, close to full every night."

During the State Fair, and hopefully more often into the future.

"We have facilities that are going to lend themselves to be able to host a lot of events throughout the year, so this will just enable the economy to grow even more. Not just in Grand Island, but in surrounding communities," said Atkins.

we found the layout to be much more user-friendly. wide sidewalks connecting major buildings and many food vendors close by the barns. may need to rethink the beef pit, location or size that did disrupt traffic flow along the walk to the barns. loved the bright, clean buildings with a/c and easy to find bathrooms in every building! only hiccup was long wait to get pre-paid scooter, but that was on supplier not the fair.

I was disappointed in the fair. There were so many children there that we had to stand in line to get even a hamburger. I had trouble using the map and I asked many volunteers where different activities were taken place and they did not know either. I suggest you get some booths around with lap tops to help confused seniors like myself. The grounds and the buildings were wonderful. I am sure with time, many improvements will be made. None the less, I will not drive 120 miles to go again. Continue your good work.
